The erhu is a two-stringed, bowed musical instrument. It may also be called a “southern fiddle”, and sometimes known in the Western world as the “Chinese violin” or a “Chinese two-stringed fiddle”. It is used as a solo instrument as well as in small ensembles and large orchestras. It is the most popular of the huqin family of traditional bowed string instruments used by various ethnic groups of China. A very versatile instrument, the erhu is used in both traditional and contemporary music arrangements such as in pop, rock, jazz, etc.
We recorded every note transition within an octave for 2 Legato styles: Slur and Slide. The result is that you hear an actual performance when transitioning between connected notes.
Here’s where we went a little crazy. We sampled every Legato transition twice. This really opens up the ability to perform more natural repeating patterns, as each transition will trigger a unique sample variation upon repeat.
Vibrato was specifically modeled after real vibrato source-recordings. The result is universal control over vibrato speed and intensity without the limitations of pre-recorded samples.
No crossfading – no problem! Simulated Dynamics is modeled to behave like a real Erhu, based of real recordings. The nice side-effect to this feature being that dynamics are smooth, responsive, and devoid of the dreaded crossfade phasing issues.
Our innovative Legato feature that adjusts the speed of Legato transitions in response to your performance speed – sounding more realistic and feeling more reactive in a way not possible with traditional legato instruments.
Create your own virtual Erhu ensemble with the Ensemble builder. Stack up to 8 players, change their seating position, and tweak other humanization parameters such as intonation and timing for realistic (and fun) effects.
Besides being used as part of the modelled dynamics engine, you can adjust the amount of bow noise (inherent in close-mic string recordings) with the turn of a knob – useful for getting a cleaner or softer sound.
Expanding on our Adaptive Legato feature, you can control the length of Portamento Legato transitions in real-time or as a static adjustment.
