Herring Clarinet

A soft and expressive classical clarinet with the flexibility to create realistic woodwind performances. Proudly flexing some new programming features, this instrument can handle anything you throw at it. Satisfyingly agile with a buttery tone = good times making music.

Herring Clarinet

Here’s something we’ve wanted for a long time, and after much development it’s finally here! Herring Clarinet was a project over two years in the making. José Herring, an avid VI-user himself, reached out to us wanting to create something that had never been done before, and the challenge was set to create a sample-based Bb clarinet with wide dynamic expression. We adventured into some deep new territory in terms of technology, and came out with one of our finest creations! Implementing dynamic morphing and breath pressure response as the fundamental performance behaviors, you can enjoy sweeping through the ranges without any fake crossfading of samples.

Standout Features

Adaptive Legato
Herring Clarinet uses our innovative Legato script, which adjusts the speed of the Legato transition in response to your performance. The result is a super fluid and responsive action with a wide range of detail that has never been achievable before.
Reactive Breath Pressure
Something we spent a long time developing to simulate an effect of breath/wind pressure in wind instruments – Dynamic control movement constantly interacts with pitch depending on adjustment speed. It’s a subtle thing that helps to make performances sound even more realistic.
Dynamics Morphing
No crossfading – no problem! Dynamics can seamlessly sweep between real velocity layer samples without the dreaded crossfading issues, thanks to our phase-alignment sample processing. It’s dark wizardry – I know!
Physically Modelled Vibrato
Vibrato was specifically designed for Herring Clarinet modeled after real vibrato source-recordings. The result is simultaneous control over vibrato speed and intensity without the limitations of pre-recorded samples.
Modeled Flutter Tongue
Flutter tonguing is a wind instrument technique in which the performer rolls their tongue to create a flutter sound. We’ve modeled this behavior so you can have full control over the intensity of this effect, from a light purr to a strong growl!
Modeled Multiphonics

Using a series of modulators based on analysis of real samples and an understanding of the physics of multiphonics, we’ve recreated this effect so you can seamlessly transition to-and-from multiple note tones for wild effects with the turn of a knob.

Simulated Trills
An automatic Trill feature is conveniently included for performing realistic trills as an alternative to the super-agile legato samples. You can trigger Major or Minor trills and configure trill Speed as well, all in real-time if you like!
Pitch Instability

This experimental setting allows you to introduce some chaos in your performance by randomizing each note’s pitch by a small amount. Subtle use of this can add an extra layer of humanization.

True Legato Samples

We recorded every note transition within an octave for 2 Legato styles: Slur and Tongued. The result is that you hear an actual performance when transitioning between connected notes.

Meet the Musician
